They're all spring-fed or spring-influenced. They all have their charm. They are _not_ all equally good for kids. This is the ranked, opinionated guide from [Son's Blue River Camp](/) on the San Marcos. ## The Ranking **1\. San Marcos River** (Kingsbury, at Son's Blue River Camp) — best for ages 3+, easy current, riverfront cabins. **2\. Frio River** (Concan) — gorgeous, but a 4–5 hour drive from most metros. **3\. Comal River** (New Braunfels) — short, fun, but the chute scares some kids. **4\. Guadalupe River** (Gruene/Canyon Lake) — beautiful, but rapids and party crowds. **5\. San Marcos River — Best Overall for Families Spring-fed at 72°F. Gentle current, no rapids, no chutes. Cypress shade. River beaches every couple hundred yards for kids to break. Riverfront log cabins, glamping, and tent sites at the put-in (no driving back to a hotel). 60 minutes from both Austin and San Antonio. Capped daily attendance keeps it from feeling crowded. Frio River — Most Photogenic Concan and Garner State Park — limestone cliffs, jade-green water, the iconic Texas swimming-hole aesthetic. Best for older kids who can swim. Long drive (4+ hours from Houston, 3.5 from Austin), and lodging books out a year in advance. Worth the trip once. ## 3\. Comal River — Closest to New Braunfels Two miles long, three or four small chutes, in-town. Outfitter-heavy. Great for short floats with elementary-age kids who can handle a small chute. Medina River — Quiet Pick Bandera area. Pretty, peaceful, and underrated. Limited tubing infrastructure compared to the bigger rivers.
