# Day Trips From Austin: The Best San Marcos River Escape

Looking for a real [day trip from Austin](/day-trip-austin)? You don't need to drive all the way to Big Bend. Forty-five minutes south of downtown, the spring-fed San Marcos River runs cold, clear, and largely uncrowded — and Son's Blue River Camp is set up specifically to make a one-day visit easy. Most Austin families default to Barton Springs, then get tired of paying for parking and fighting for grass space. The San Marcos solves both problems with private cabana reservations and dedicated parking included.

## A Sample Austin Day-Trip Itinerary

## Best Months

April through October is peak. The water is consistent year-round, but the air is friendliest May–September. Holiday weekends fill 2–4 weeks ahead, so book early.
